IHP and partners start European photonics project “BOOM”
Under the consortium leadership of University of Athens, IHP and partners have recently started a new European photonic IC and technology project called BOOM. BOOM pursues the advancement of Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) technology to develop compact, cost-effective and power efficient silicon photonic components that enable photonic Tb/s capacity routers for current and new generation high-speed fiber-optic core networks.
IHP contributes to BOOM in the area of SiGe IC design. In particular, a broadband SiGe driver IC with high swing (> 2V) and ultra-short fall- and rise-time for electro-absorption modulators will be developed. The driver will be used together with other components in an innovative Tb/s photonic router with a line rate of 160 Gb/s.
BOOM is funded by the European Commission in the FP7.
