Department System Design

IHP’s System Design department conducts research and development for high-end wireless solutions

Wireless System Design gets more and more importance in current applications. From ubiquitous availability of wireless access to the internet, tele-medical services via body area network to delay sensitive applications in modern industry 4.0 systems, wireless access builds an indispensable platform.

The requirements on the wireless platform are depending on the use case such that systems with extreme high data-rates are requested for public access and backhaul systems whereas for body area networks minimal energy consumption is requested.

This wide field of requirements forms the basis of the research work in the System Design department. Based on ideas like wireless engines we investigate in depth several different system aspects reaching from the baseband processing and channel coding protocol-stacks and middleware-systems up to the applications themselves.

The department coordinates the DFG special priority project SPP1655 "Wireless 100Gb/s and beyond". Several DFG projects within this SPP but also outside the SPP are conducted on several aspects of wireless systems.

The work is conducted in three research groups on wireless broadband systems, sensor networks and middleware platforms and design and test methodologies. Each group is connected to a joint laboratory with one of the universities: BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, Humboldt-University Berlin and University of Potsdam. Most of the group leaders hold chairs in the respective universities of their joint laboratories.

Based on significant third-party funding in the System Design department currently are working more than 50 full-time researchers, post-docs and doctorial students.
