Group IV plasmonics

Group IV material based plasmonic platform for broadband chem-bio sensors


A key application of broadband (sub THz to near Infrared) sensing platform is detection and sensing of biomolecules, protein conformations and more. CMOS/BiCMOS compatibility of such sensing platform enables designing inexpensive lab-on-chip devices for chem-bio sensing. To this end, the focus of the project is to incorporate group IV materials’ (Si, Ge, Graphene, Sn) tunable plasmonic behavior on BiCMOS platform for establishing wideband sensing platform by tuning the plasma frequency of the material.

IHP's Contribution

In this project IHP is dedicated towards plasmonic device design and characterization. IHP’s material research department together with the Semiconductor Materials Research laboratory of University of California, Los Angeles, has established highly sensitive surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) based on graphene plasmonics. Together with the Technology department of IHP, fabrication and characterization of doping and composition of SiGe micro/nano-structures for tunable plasmonics is done by IHP’s material research department.
