Safe and Secure European Routing


The Internet has become an indispensable part of people’s life and has developed to a fundamental infrastructure. Its current architecture lacks many features which are associated with a trusted, safe and secure communication medium. The SASER project targets to investigate and develop concepts and technologies for a European solution for Safe and Secure Routing in the network. The goal of SASER is to provide the scientific, technical, and technological concepts and solutions for secure transport networks in the 2020 time frame. The European SASER activities are coordinated under the umbrella of the Celtic-Plus research initiative, which is part of the inter-governmental EUREKA network.

IHP's Contribution

IHP’s SiGe:C BiCMOS technology allows complex and highly integrated driver implementations for the state-of-the-art distributed optical front-end, suitable for future adaptive multilevel signalling. IHP is developing driver arrays for segmented optical modulators that can also be monolithically integrated. Another approach, based on binary-to-thermo code converters, required for the IQ modulators with integrated DAC functionality, increases the energy efficiency of the system. Moreover, the BiCMOS process combines the CMOS digital tuning capability with the highly reliable and fast signal performance of the bipolar transistors. Careful co-design of drivers together with specific modulators and packaging, allows more energy-efficient and cost-effective systems.

IHP develops optical receivers with integrated photodiodes and drivers for optical modulators using a new electronic-photonic integrated circuit (ePIC) technology based on IHP’s high-performance 0.25µm SiGe:C BiCMOS technologies. The drivers are realized in single and array variants. The main design challenge is to provide highly linear drivers and TIAs with minimum total harmonic distortion, low power consumption and high bandwidth, suitable for coherent communication systems.


This research is funded by the federal ministry of education and research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF). SASER is a BMBF flagship project in the area of telecommunications.
