UWB Communication (Tandem, Tele-Diagnostik)

Development of an UWB transceiver for data communication in accordance to IEEE 802.15.4a intended for wireless sensor network applications


The Objective

The goal of this project is to develop an impulse radio ultra-wide band (IR-UWB) transceiver for wireless communication systems compliant with the IEEE 802.15.4a standard. The main area of applications is expected in wireless sensor networks, where demands for low power consumption and low system costs dominate the development. On the one hand, the optimum trade-off between RF sub-system performance and overall system power consumption will be evaluated. On the other hand, the maximum level of monolithic integration is targeted to minimize system costs. In order to broaden the potential field of applications, multi-channel and multi-data rate capabilities shall be implemented as defined in the IEEE 802.15.4a standard.

IHP’s Contribution


IHP is designing a single-chip IR-UWB transceiver including the entire RF subsystem, an appropriate AD-converter, and a baseband processor. Prior to the full integration, the main components will be designed and tested individually. An advanced power management has to be implemented, which allows fast access to sleep modes and different active modes.

This single-chip design is manufactured in IHP's 0.25 µm low-cost SiGe:C BiCMOS technology SGB25V. Later, migration to the IHP 0.13 µm CMOS technology SG13S is planned.


This research is funded by the Bundesministerium für Forschung und Bildung in the framework of the TANDEM project and by the State of Brandenburg in the framework of the “Tele-Diagnostik” project.
