60 GHz Backhaul system with electronic beam steering


The goal of the Exist-Forschungstransfer funded project BeamConnect is to prove the feasibility of using a 60 GHz data communication system as backhaul link for small cells. The system allows data rates above 1 Gbit/s over distances up to 1 km. The main research topic is electronic beam steering of an antenna beam with very high directivity, i.e. the possibility to tilt the highly focused antenna beam over a large angular range through adaption of signal phase and signal amplitude. This includes the antenna module as well as algorithms for beam control and for controlling the medium access when using point-to-multipoint connections.


The BeamConnect project was funded under the program "EXIST - University-Based Business Start-Ups" from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and the European Sozial Funds of the European Union (ESF).

The building and the infrastructure of the IHP were funded by the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union, funds of the Federal Government and also funds of the Federal State of Brandenburg.
