Beamforming can significantly improve the signal-to-noise ratio and the range in 60 GHz communication. Because of the small wavelength of 5 mm, multiple antenna transceivers are easily possible with small dimensions. An RF phase shifting architecture has been chosen at both the transmitter and receiver chips, because it exhibits the lowest number of added components and lower power dissipation. A high performance 2 bit phase shifter is designed for the transmitter while an RF vector-modulator is implemented in the receiver.
